ABOUT
Matilda Bilberg (she/her) is a dance artist based in Stockholm, working internationally.
Matilda believes in dance as a way to explore and play with the experience of existing. Her work has its primary focus on the craft and execution of dancing. Combining an analytical and technical-physiological approach with a playful, caring, and compassionate attitude and procedures towards body and movement. She has engaged in long-term research into what it means to come together, to be together - embracing difference, honoring embodied knowledge, and allowing each collaborator’s history to shape the present. Sustainability, in all its plural forms - relational, physical, environmental, and economic - is at the heart of her practice. She cares for her own body, each other’s, the collective body, and the world she moves within and keeps on wondering how dance and performance can contribute to a present reality and a hopeful future.
Recently, Matilda’s work has started to engage in a more peripheral and back-oriented focus. This perspective has opened space to explore backspaces*, histories, profound vulnerabilities - both personal and collective - and the nuances of relational and interpersonal dynamics.
Matilda did her dance studies at the Royal Swedish Ballet School (2010-2013), followed by a master's degree in choreography at Stockholm University of the Arts (2022-2024).
Matilda’s choreographic works have been co-produced by Tanzhaus Zürich (CH) and Rote Fabrik (CH) and have been presented at theaters/festivals such as Dansens Hus (SE), MDT (SE), Tanzhaus Zürich (CH), Théâtre Sévelin 36 (CH), Rote Fabrik (CH), DOCK 11 (DE), Atalante (SE), Västmanlandsmusiken (SE), B.A.D. Festival Bilbao (ES), IDEA festival Jordan (JOR), Les Rencontres Chorégraphique de Casablanca (MAR), and in the form of a workshopLAB during KINANI Mozambique.
Together with her long-term collaborator Jenna Hendry, they were selected as Aerowaves Artists 2021 with their performance I U M I.
The two of them also formed the collective UTOPISISTAS together with Maria Teresa Tanzarella (IT/SE) and Nerea Gurrutxaga (ES) in 2019.
As a dancer Matilda has and is working for choreographers such as Cristina Caprioli / ccap, Live Art Collective MELO, Helena Franzén, David Zambrano, Nicole Neidert, Satoshi Kudo, Maria Ulriksson, Frame Sweden / Daniel Staaf, Linda Forsman, and Julia Krauss a.o. As well as collaborating with composer Torbjörn Grass and the audiovisual artist Ionnalee.

By Your Neighbour- performance in Västerås Sweden
In By Your Neighbour, a group of young dancers from Västerås, move through the city in an interplay between bodies, architecture, and the invisible threads that bind us together. They explore what it means to be together—to share space, time, and direction.
How can we meet in movement, listen through our bodies, and let dance become our common language beyond words?
With sensitivity and courage, they allow dance to blur boundaries—between the individual and the collective, between me and you, between the familiar and the unknown.
Welcome to experience a living choreography where every step creates new meaning.
Choreography: Matilda Bilberg, Nassim Meki, Nerea Gurrutxaga in collaboration with the dancers.
Concept and project management: Matilda Bilberg
Collaboration partners: Västerås City and Västerås Concert Hall
